Better Access (Medicare) referrals
Under Medicare Better Access guidelines, psychologists must receive a valid referral letter to provide rebated services. A Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) on its own is not sufficient.
Referrals are valid for the number of sessions stated on the referral letter.
What to include in a referral
A valid referral should include:
• Patient’s full name, date of birth, and address
• Number of sessions being referred (e.g., 4 or 6 sessions; up to 10 sessions per calendar year may be available under Better Access)
• Confirmation that a Mental Health Treatment Plan has been completed
• Request for psychological treatment
• Relevant diagnosis or presenting concerns/symptoms
• Current medications (if applicable)
• Date, signature, and either the practice address or provider number
Review and re-referral
At the completion of a treatment plan, I will provide a brief progress update to assist with reviewing the client’s ongoing needs.
If further sessions are required, a new referral letter will be needed for any remaining or additional sessions.
